Swayambunath
There are two large stupas in Katmandu: this one and Bodanath. Swayambunath is a little outside town. It is on top of a hill and is so big that it would not be able to fit in one picture.
Swayambunath is the first building to have been erected in the Katmandu valley. Legend says it sprang out of a lake before the valley was inhabited. It is fun to visit because, on the way up to it at the top of the hill, we see lots of monkeys.
Swayambunath was just redone and 80 kilograms (about 170 pounds) of gold were used to re-gild the structure.
